The short version.

Most single charger installs take most of a day with both of us on site. What changes that is the length of the cable run, the access, and whether your board has room for another device.

Single phase or three phase. We work that out on site.

Most Adelaide homes have a single phase supply. Our single phase unit, the Evnex E2, delivers up to about 7.4kW, which is up to around 50km of range for every hour it is plugged in. Left overnight, that is more than most driving asks for.

Where a property has three phase, the Evnex X22 delivers up to about 22kW, or up to around 120km of range per hour. Those figures are typical of the category rather than particular to one brand.

Worth knowing: a single phase only unit cannot be converted later. The X22 runs single phase now and three phase later on the same hardware, so it is the one to fit if three phase is a possibility for you.

So the right one depends on your supply, your car and how you actually use it. We check what your car will accept as well as what your board will supply, and we specify accordingly at the site visit, before you have bought anything.

The detail.

Whether your switchboard has room

An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit with its own protective device. On a lot of Adelaide homes, particularly anything with the original board, there is simply no physical room left for another device. That is not a problem you want discovered on install day.

We look at the board before we quote, every time. Sometimes it is fine. Sometimes the board needs work first, and we would rather have that conversation with you at the kitchen table than halfway through a Tuesday with the power off. If the board does need attention it makes sense to do both together, because most of the labour is shared and the alternative is paying twice to open the same enclosure. The protection an EV circuit needs

Australian wiring rules require DC fault protection on an EV circuit. That is achieved either with a Type B RCD, or with a Type A RCD combined with 6mA DC detection built into the charger itself. Which one your circuit needs depends on your charger, so we read its documentation and specify accordingly rather than fitting whatever is standard.

Common questions.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard to install an EV charger?

Sometimes, and it depends on physical space in the board rather than on the amount of power available to the house. An EV charger needs its own protective device, and many older boards have no room left for one. We check the board at the site visit and tell you before we quote, not after.

Can I install a 7kW charger now and upgrade it to three phase later?

No. A single phase only charger cannot be converted. The 22kW three phase model is the one that does both, running single phase now and three phase later on the same unit. If three phase is a possibility for you, that is the model to fit, and we will run the cabling to suit.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

A typical single charger install on a cable run of around twenty metres is most of a day with both of us on site. Longer runs, difficult access, or switchboard work alongside it will extend that, and we will tell you at quoting stage rather than on the day.

Do you handle the SAPN paperwork?

Yes. Any charger drawing more than 20 amps needs approval from SA Power Networks, which in practice means almost every home charger. We obtain that approval before your charger is installed rather than after, so it runs at its proper rating from the day it goes on the wall. You do not need to contact SAPN yourself, and there is nothing left outstanding once we hand over. Your certificate of compliance comes to you on completion.

Can I supply my own charger?

Yes, and some clients do. It needs a Type 2 connector and an RCM mark, and we will need the manual before quoting so we can confirm the protection requirements and whether it needs a control cable. If it turns out to be unsuitable we will say so before anything is installed.

Do you install chargers for businesses as well as homes?

Yes, single phase or three phase. Workplace installs usually involve more discussion about where cars actually park and how the load sits against the rest of the site, so allow more time at the assessment stage.
