The short version.

Both directors are ACMA registered cablers. That is the registration required to work on communications cabling in Australia and it is a separate registration to the electrical licence.

At a house on Hindmarsh Island the NBN connection kept dropping out. Replacing the router would not have helped, because the connection itself was the problem. We replaced it with Starlink and rebuilt the network around the new connection. A UniFi Cloud Gateway Max ties it into the home's existing automation, and six access points carry coverage through the house, through the garage, across the backyard and all the way out to the private jetty.

That job is the whole argument in one project. The internet connection, the cabling, the wireless and the automation are not four separate systems. They are one system, and it works properly when one team designs all of it and runs the cable for all of it at once.

The coverage had to reach the end of the jetty, not just the back door.

The detail.

A house with bad wireless usually does not have a wireless problem

It has a cabling problem. Somebody put a single modem router in the study, on the far side of the house from where everyone sits, and every year since then another device has been added to a network that was never designed. The fix is almost never a better router. It is cable in the right places, feeding access points in the right places. We treat the network as part of the building, run in at the same stage as the power, rather than as a box that gets plugged in at the end.

Why we build on Ubiquiti

Consumer mesh kits are easy and they stop being enough at about the point a house gets a second storey or a detached garage. Ubiquiti UniFi sits a level above that. One controller manages the gateway, the switching and every access point, from a single interface. It is monitored, it is updateable, and when something misbehaves you can see what and where rather than guessing.

It also means the system grows. Adding an access point later is an addition to an existing system rather than a new system bolted alongside the old one.

Structured cabling is the part that lasts

Wireless standards change every few years. Cable in a wall lasts decades. Every access point and fixed device we install is cabled, and the cable is run and terminated properly, with power delivered over the same cable where the device supports it.

Both directors are also ACMA registered cablers, which is the separate registration required to work on communications cabling in Australia. The same two people design the network, run the cable and configure it.

Common questions.

My wifi drops out at the back of the house. Can you fix it without running cable?

Sometimes, but usually the honest answer is no. A dead spot is a coverage problem, and coverage comes from having an access point near the dead spot, which needs a cable. We will tell you at the site walk whether there is a cable-free option worth trying rather than selling you one that will not work.

Do I need Starlink or is NBN fine?

NBN is fine in most of Adelaide. Starlink solves a specific problem, which is a location where the fixed connection is unreliable or unavailable, as it was at Hindmarsh Island. We will not recommend it where the existing connection is sound.

What happens to the system if my internet goes down?

Local network traffic keeps working. Devices on the network still talk to each other. What you lose is remote access from outside the house until the connection returns.

Can you work with a network somebody else installed?

Usually. We will look at what is there first. Sometimes the existing cabling is sound and only the hardware needs replacing, which is a much smaller job than starting again.
